HU states that the scholarship is jointly financed by the German Federal Government and private sponsors such as companies, foundations and individuals.
What is the Humboldt University Deutschlandstipendium?
The Deutschlandstipendium supports students who demonstrate strong academic performance together with broader achievements, engagement or personal circumstances.
At Humboldt University, selection considers:
- academic performance
- social or political engagement
- special social, family or personal circumstances
- awards and prizes.
HU particularly encourages applications from students who have achieved academically while also overcoming personal or educational obstacles.
How much funding do you receive?
If selected, you receive: €300 per month
The scholarship is awarded for at least two semesters.
That means a typical 12-month funding period would equal: €3,600
The scholarship starts on 1 April 2027, at the beginning of the summer semester.
An extension may be possible as long as you remain within the standard period of study and continue to meet the relevant conditions.
Who can apply for the HU Deutschlandstipendium?
You can apply if you will be enrolled in your main subject at Humboldt University when the funding begins.
Eligible applicants include:
- Bachelor’s students
- Master’s students
- first-year students
- students completing a second degree
- students completing a third degree
- students from all subject areas
- students of all nationalities.
You should normally remain within the standard period of study.
If you exceed the standard study period because of circumstances such as studying abroad or raising a child, you may still be considered.
Can international students apply for the Humboldt University Deutschlandstipendium?
Yes. Humboldt University explicitly states that students of all nationalities can apply.
You must still meet the normal study and enrolment requirements.
If your previous academic degree was completed outside Germany, you may need to convert your grades when completing the application.
Do I need German citizenship?
No. German citizenship is not required.
The scholarship is open to students of all nationalities.
Can I apply if I am not yet enrolled at HU?
Potentially, yes. HU confirms that first-year applicants and prospective students can apply, provided they are enrolled at Humboldt University by the time the scholarship funding begins.
The key date is the start of the funding period: 1 April 2027
By then, you must be enrolled with your main subject at HU.
Can I apply for a second or third degree?
Yes. The Deutschlandstipendium can also support a second or third degree, as long as you remain within the standard study period.
This makes the scholarship broader than some programmes that only support a first university degree.
Do I need a minimum GPA or grade?
HU does not publish one universal minimum GPA or grade.
Academic performance is one of the main selection criteria, but your application can also be strengthened by:
- engagement
- awards
- family responsibilities
- social circumstances
- personal challenges.
This means you should not assume that only students with perfect grades can apply.
Can I receive BAföG and the Deutschlandstipendium together?
Yes. HU explicitly confirms that you can receive: BAföG, and the Deutschlandstipendium at the same time.
The scholarship also does not reduce child benefit.
Can I receive Erasmus+ and the Deutschlandstipendium together?
Yes. You can receive Erasmus+ funding and the Deutschlandstipendium simultaneously.
HU also states that scholarship payments can continue during a subject-related study-abroad period, including an Erasmus stay, subject to the applicable conditions.
Can I receive another scholarship at the same time?
Sometimes. HU states that multiple funding is only possible under certain circumstances.
If you already receive another scholarship, check whether it is compatible before applying rather than assuming that both awards can be combined.
What documents do you need?
The official HU application procedure requires:
- motivation letter of up to 3,000 characters including spaces
- explanation of your social or political engagement
- information about awards and prizes
- information about special social, family or personal circumstances
- tabular CV without a photo
- current enrolment certificate
- current academic transcript
- current grade overview including your average grade
- school-leaving certificate
- previous university degree certificate, where applicable
- evidence of engagement, awards or special circumstances, where applicable.
If you upload several supporting documents for one category, HU asks you to combine them into one PDF before uploading.
What should you write in your motivation letter?
Your motivation letter should help the selection committee understand your academic path and overall profile.
Focus on:
- your academic achievements
- why your programme matters to you
- your future goals
- your social or political engagement
- obstacles or personal circumstances that have influenced your studies
- awards or achievements that support your application.
Avoid making the letter only about financial need.
The scholarship selection explicitly considers academic performance, engagement and special personal circumstances.
