What is the Mittelsachsen Medical Scholarship?
The scholarship is offered by Landkreis Mittelsachsen, a district in the German state of Saxony.
Its purpose is not only to financially support students during their medical education. The district also wants to connect future doctors and dentists with hospitals, practices and medical professionals in Mittelsachsen and encourage them to work in the region after graduation.
Students can receive support from the first semester onward, and applications are generally accepted throughout the year. For the 2026/27 winter-semester funding round, however, applications must be submitted by 30 September 2026.
How much funding does the scholarship provide?
Successful applicants receive: - €400 per month - up to 13 semesters for human medicine - up to 11 semesters for dentistry - access to a mentoring programme - networking with doctors, clinics and medical practices in Mittelsachsen - opportunities to learn about future career options in the region.
The official sources do not describe tuition fees, travel costs or health insurance as being covered, so these should not be assumed to be part of the scholarship.
Who can apply?
You can apply if you are studying or intend to study: - Human Medicine, or - Dentistry
at a German university or at a university in another EU member state where the resulting professional qualification is recognised in Germany.
The programme is open to students across different semesters, including applicants who are preparing to begin their studies. However, a valid enrolment certificate must be available when the scholarship is awarded.
Can international students apply?
The published scholarship rules do not state a specific nationality requirement.
However, international applicants still need to satisfy the programme's study requirements—for example, studying medicine or dentistry at an eligible German or EU university with a qualification recognised in Germany.
Applicants should confirm their individual eligibility with Landkreis Mittelsachsen before applying if they are unsure.
What commitment do scholarship recipients make?
This is one of the most important parts of the scholarship.
Recipients are expected to complete practical training phases, and particularly the practical year where possible in Mittelsachsen. They must also participate in the district's mentoring programme.
After completing their medical education, recipients must generally either:
complete their specialist medical training in Mittelsachsen, or
Work as a doctor in the district.
Where recipients do not immediately enter specialist training, the rules include a requirement to work as a doctor in Mittelsachsen for at least five years under the specified conditions.
This means students should consider the scholarship as a long-term professional commitment, not simply €400 of monthly financial assistance.
What documents do you need?
The current application form asks applicants to submit:
completed scholarship application form
tabular CV
current university enrolment certificate, if already available.
The form also allows applicants to include, where relevant:
recommendation letter
motivation letter
evidence of internships
evidence of voluntary or community engagement.
If you have not yet enrolled, the enrolment certificate can be submitted later. However, it must be available when the scholarship decision is made.
How to apply for the Mittelsachsen Medical Scholarship
Step 1 — Check your eligibility. Make sure your medicine or dentistry programme meets the scholarship requirements.
Step 2 — Complete the official application form. You will need to provide details about your studies, your connection to Mittelsachsen and your motivation for participating in the programme.
Step 3 — Prepare your documents. Attach your CV and enrolment certificate where available, along with any relevant optional supporting documents.
For students seeking funding beginning in the winter semester 2026/27, the confirmed deadline is:
30 September 2026
Funding begins on 1 October. Applications are generally possible throughout the year, but applicants seeking the upcoming winter-semester award should follow the September deadline.
How are applicants selected?
Applications are reviewed by a selection committee involving representatives from the district's public health service, regional hospitals, medical practices and dental professionals.
According to the scholarship guideline, applications are assessed using regional considerations and academic/performance-related criteria. The final award decision is made by Landkreis Mittelsachsen based on the committee's recommendation and available funding.
Important things to know before applying
The scholarship is normally a non-repayable grant, but repayment can become necessary if recipients fail to meet key programme obligations.
For example, repayment provisions can apply if a recipient abandons their medical studies, permanently fails the required medical examination, or does not meet specified post-study professional commitments. Depending on the circumstances, repayment may be full or proportional.
Students who already receive comparable individual financial support from another programme may also be excluded from receiving this scholarship.
Read the scholarship agreement carefully before accepting an award.
