What is the TU Darmstadt Deutschlandstipendium?
The Deutschlandstipendium supports students who demonstrate strong academic performance and personal commitment. It is funded jointly by the German federal government and private sponsors, including businesses, foundations and individual donors.
The scholarship is awarded independently of the applicant's income and does not need to be repaid. Students can also receive it alongside BAföG, Germany's student financial assistance program.
Alongside financial support, scholarship recipients may have opportunities to connect with sponsors through networking activities, which can help them develop professional contacts during their studies.
How much funding does the scholarship provide?
Private sponsors
€150/month
German federal government:
€150/month
Total
€300/month
The standard funding period is two semesters. Students can apply for an extension in subsequent years, subject to continued eligibility and academic performance.
The scholarship is supplementary financial support, not a full scholarship covering all living costs.
Who can apply for the Deutschlandstipendium?
Students pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's or teaching degree at TU Darmstadt can apply, including those beginning their first semester.
You must have at least two semesters remaining within your program's standard study period when scholarship funding begins.
The university applies the following semester limits during the application round:
Degree program
Maximum current subject semester
Bachelor's
4th semester
Master's
2nd semester
Teaching degree (Lehramt an Gymnasien)
7th semester
These limits are assessed using the applicant's subject semester in the summer semester preceding the funding period.
Can international students apply?
Yes. International students are eligible, provided they meet TU Darmstadt's enrolment, academic performance and study-period requirements.
Applicants with foreign academic certificates may need to provide translated documents and grades converted to the German grading system.
Is a minimum grade required?
For prospective or first-semester Bachelor's and Gymnasium teaching-degree applicants, TU Darmstadt requires a university entrance qualification equivalent to a German grade of 1.5 or better for the initial selection.
For students further into their degree, selection considers their academic results and completed credits. The university does not publish one universal minimum grade covering every applicant group.
What documents are required?
The application process has two stages. The initial application is completed through an online form and does not require applicants to submit the full supporting-document package.
Only shortlisted candidates are invited to submit documents for the second stage.
These include:
- A motivation letter of one to two pages. - A tabular CV. - The completed second-stage application form. - Relevant academic certificates or transcripts, depending on the applicant's degree and semester. - Supporting evidence of achievements, professional experience, voluntary activities or special personal circumstances, where applicable.
Shortlisted candidates must submit the documents electronically in the PDF format specified by TU Darmstadt, normally within 14 days of receiving the invitation.
How to apply for the TU Darmstadt Deutschlandstipendium
The application has two stages. Only applicants who pass the initial academic assessment are invited to submit additional documents.
1. Complete the online application: Visit the official TU Darmstadt application portal and complete the first-stage questionnaire by 18 October 2026. The university estimates that this takes approximately 10 minutes.
2. Wait for the shortlisting decision: TU Darmstadt reviews applicants' academic results. Successful candidates receive an email invitation from their department to participate in the second stage.
3. Submit your supporting documents: Shortlisted candidates must provide their motivation letter, CV, academic records and other applicable documents within the deadline specified in their invitation, normally 14 days.
4. Receive the final decision: Each department's selection committee evaluates shortlisted candidates using academic and additional personal criteria. Successful applicants receive their scholarship award notification in December.
TU Darmstadt sends application updates to students' university email addresses. Applicants should check their inbox and spam folder regularly.

Important things to know before applying

Students pursuing a second degree or studying part-time may also qualify. Doctoral students are not eligible.
Scholarship recipients are not required to work for their private sponsor after graduation.
