Each Deutschlandstipendium is financed jointly by private sponsors and the German federal government, with each side contributing half of the annual scholarship amount.
What is the UdK Berlin Deutschlandstipendium?
The Deutschlandstipendium is a merit-based scholarship for talented students at Universität der Künste Berlin.
Selected students receive €300 per month for at least two semesters within the standard period of study.
For the 2027 funding round, UdK Berlin expects approximately 17 new scholarships starting in April 2027.
The programme is funded jointly by private donors and foundations and the German federal government.
Unlike a need-based emergency grant, the Deutschlandstipendium primarily rewards talent ,academic or artistic performance ,professional achievement.
However, UdK also considers engagement, personal background and special circumstances when evaluating the applicant's overall potential.
How much funding do you receive?
Selected students receive €300 per month from: 1 April 2027 until 31 March 2028.
Over 12 months, this equals €3,600 in total.
The university states that an extension may be possible for up to one additional year.
An extension is not automatic and depends on the applicable funding and scholarship conditions.
Is the scholarship income-dependent?
No. UdK Berlin states that the Deutschlandstipendium is independent of income and can be received together with BAföG.
This means your parents' income or your own income is not used in the same way as for a means-tested scholarship.
Can I receive BAföG and the Deutschlandstipendium together?
Yes. UdK Berlin explicitly states that the scholarship is compatible with BAföG.
The €300 monthly Deutschlandstipendium does not automatically prevent you from receiving BAföG.
How many UdK Berlin scholarships are available in 2027?
UdK Berlin expects to award approximately 17 new Deutschlandstipendien from April 2027, subject to available funding.
The university divides these into unrestricted scholarships and faculty- or subject-specific scholarships.
The final number is not guaranteed because the call explicitly states that awards depend on the availability of funds.
How many unrestricted scholarships are available?
Approximately 6 unrestricted scholarships are expected to be available.
Students from all UdK Berlin disciplines can compete for these awards.
This is especially important if your subject does not fit one of the donor-specific scholarships listed below.
Which subject-specific scholarships are available?
In addition to the six unrestricted scholarships, the current call lists several scholarships tied to individual faculties or subjects.
Faculty of Fine Arts
There are expected to be 4 scholarships for students in all study programmes within the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Faculty of Design
There is expected to be 1 scholarship for students in: Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftskommunikation.
Faculty of Music
Two scholarships are currently listed.
1 subject-specific scholarship for students in:
- Viola
- Violoncello
- Trumpet
with preference for students in a Master's programme, or Konzertexamen.
There is also 1 scholarship for students from all programmes within the Faculty of Music.
Faculty of Performing Arts
The current call lists three awards.
1 scholarship for students from all programmes in the Faculty of Performing Arts.
1 scholarship for students studying:
- Acting
- Musical/Show
- Stage Design
- Costume Design.
1 scholarship specifically for Acting students.
HochschulĂĽbergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin
There is expected to be 1 scholarship for students from all programmes at the HZT Berlin.
Can students from any UdK subject apply?
Yes. Even if your field is not named in one of the subject-specific awards, you may still compete for one of the: six unrestricted Deutschlandstipendien.
These are open to students from all UdK disciplines.
Who can apply for the UdK Berlin Deutschlandstipendium?
There are two main applicant groups.
Current UdK Berlin students
You can apply if you demonstrate outstanding performance and will remain within the applicable standard study period during Summer Semester 2027, and Winter Semester 2027/28.
Newly admitted Summer Semester 2027 students
You can also apply if:
- you have already been admitted to UdK Berlin
- you will enrol for Summer Semester 2027
- you demonstrate outstanding artistic or academic talent.
Can international students apply?
Yes. The UdK Berlin Deutschlandstipendium explicitly supports students of all nationalities.
International students therefore do not need German citizenship to apply.
However, the 2027 application materials must be submitted in German.
Do I need permanent residence in Germany?
The current UdK Deutschlandstipendium call does not publish a German permanent-residence requirement.
The programme states that students of all nationalities are eligible.
Your eligibility is based primarily on your UdK student or admission status and the scholarship requirements rather than nationality.
Can newly admitted students apply?
Yes. You can apply if you have been admitted to UdK Berlin and will enrol for: Summer Semester 2027.
Instead of an enrolment certificate, admitted applicants can submit a copy of their admission letter.
This means you do not necessarily need to have completed enrolment before submitting the scholarship application.
Which degree levels are eligible?
UdK Berlin states that the Deutschlandstipendium supports students in:
- Bachelor's programmes
- Master's programmes
- Diplom programmes.
The university's study-financing page also describes the scholarship as supporting UdK students across Bachelor, Absolvent and Master levels.
Do I need to be within the standard study period?
Yes. Current students need to remain within the applicablE Regelstudienzeit—standard period of study during both Summer Semester 2027 and Winter Semester 2027/28.
UdK notes that individual extensions to the standard study period under Berlin's pandemic-related regulations may be taken into account where applicable.
Can I apply if I will exceed the standard study period during 2027/28?
Potentially not. The call states that applicants generally need to be studying within their applicable standard period during both semesters covered by the scholarship year.
If your individual study period has officially been extended under the applicable Berlin regulations, that may be taken into account.
If your case is unclear, confirm your individual standard-study-period status with UdK before applying.
What are the selection criteria?
The main criterion is talent and performance.
UdK Berlin specifically seeks students who have already demonstrated outstanding performance in study or professional activity, or show strong potential to achieve outstanding performance.
However, selection is not based only on grades.
Does social engagement matter?
Yes. When evaluating your overall potential, UdK may also consider:
- extracurricular engagement
- activities outside your academic discipline
- your personal educational path
- educational background
- social circumstances
- family circumstances.
This aligns with the general Deutschlandstipendium approach of considering both achievement and broader personal circumstances.
Do I need a minimum GPA?
No fixed numerical GPA or grade threshold is published in the current call.
UdK instead uses broader criteria based on outstanding talent and performance.
For artistic programmes, this is particularly relevant because academic performance cannot always be reduced to one numerical grade.
Do artistic achievements count?
Yes. The Deutschlandstipendium at UdK Berlin is specifically designed for students at an arts university.
Applicants can provide supporting evidence of:
- artistic achievements
- professional activity
- special abilities
- awards
- internships
- additional engagement.
Your overall artistic or academic profile matters alongside formal study results.
Do I need German to apply?
The current application requires all documents to be submitted in German.
The English UdK information page also states that the application form is only accepted in German.
However, the Deutschlandstipendium call itself does not publish a specific formal language-test threshold such as:
- TestDaF
- DSH
- Goethe C1
- telc C1.
So you should not describe a specific certificate as mandatory unless another applicable UdK admission rule requires it.
Can I submit my motivation letter in English?
No, based on the current application instructions.
UdK explicitly states all application documents must be submitted in German.
This includes the motivation letter.
What documents do you need?
The 2027 application requires several documents.
1. Signed CV
You need a tabular CV with your signature.
Make sure you sign the document before uploading it.
2. Motivation letter
Your motivation letter can be maximum two pages.
Use it to explain your achievements, artistic or academic development, engagement and why you are a strong candidate for the Deutschlandstipendium.
3. Bachelor's certificate, if applicable
If you are currently enrolled in a Master's programme, submit a copy of your Bachelor's degree certificate.
4. Enrolment certificate or admission letter
Current students submit an enrolment certificate.
Applicants entering UdK in Summer Semester 2027 submit a copy of their admission letter.
5. Academic record
Where applicable, provide evidence of study achievements already completed.
6. Evidence of internships, work or additional achievements
You may submit documentation for:
- internships
- professional work
- special activities
- knowledge
- abilities
- talents
- engagement.
7. Evidence of special personal circumstances
Where relevant, you can provide documentation supporting personal circumstances described in your application.
8. Recommendation letter
A recommendation letter is required.
9. Other supporting evidence
You can include other relevant documentation supporting information contained in your application.
Who can write my recommendation letter?
The recommendation should normally be written by a professionally qualified UdK Berlin teacher who is able to assess your performance in your programme.
Depending on your circumstances, the university also permits recommendations from:
- school teachers
- professionally qualified teachers at other German universities
- professionally qualified teachers at European universities
Honorary professors can provide a recommendation if they are actively teaching at UdK Berlin and can assess your performance.
What if my recommendation comes from a school teacher?
If you submit a recommendation from a school teacher, UdK states that you should additionally submit a recommendation from a UdK teacher that provides a prediction of your future performance at university.
This is particularly relevant for newly admitted students.
Can I submit missing documents later?
No. UdK Berlin states that individual supporting documents cannot be submitted later.
Your application therefore needs to be complete when you submit it.
Applications that are not submitted correctly completely on time will not be considered in the selection procedure.
Is postal submission required?
No. The 2027 application is completed entirely online.
UdK explicitly states that no postal submission is necessary.
After submitting the online form, you should receive an email confirmation.
Can I receive another scholarship at the same time?
Not every form of additional support is automatically prohibited.
However, UdK explicitly excludes simultaneous material, merit-based support from a German Begabtenförderwerk.
If you already receive another scholarship, check whether it qualifies as prohibited double funding before accepting both.
Can I receive the Deutschlandstipendium with BAföG?
Yes. UdK explicitly states that the Deutschlandstipendium can be combined with BAföG.
How long is the scholarship?
The initial funding period is 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2028.
That is 12 months. UdK also states that funding may potentially be extended for a maximum of one additional year.
Is the second year guaranteed?
No. The call states only that an extension is possible.
It does not state that every recipient automatically receives another year.
Do not calculate the scholarship as a guaranteed €7,200 two-year award.
The confirmed initial funding is €3,600 over 12 months.

How are scholarship recipients selected?
