The foundation has offered these scholarships since 2011 to support particularly high-performing and engaged medical students from Hesse and strengthen their connection with the medical centres in Giessen and Marburg.
What is the Von Behring-Röntgen Medical Scholarship?
The Von Behring-Röntgen Foundation offers scholarships to outstanding school graduates from Hesse who begin studying medicine at either Justus Liebig University Giessen, or Philipps University Marburg.
The programme provides financial support during the first two years of medical school while also connecting scholarship holders with other medical students and graduates through the foundation's network.
The foundation states that one of its aims is to build a network of qualified medical students and future alumni who remain connected to the medical centres in Giessen and Marburg.
How much funding do you receive?
If selected, you receive €750 per semester for your first four semesters of medical study.
That means the maximum scheduled funding is €3,000 in total over the first two academic years.
In annual terms, this corresponds to €1,500 per year for two years.
The official call does not state additional separate funding for:
- tuition
- travel
- accommodation
- health insurance
- study materials.
You should therefore treat the €750-per-semester scholarship as the confirmed financial benefit.
Is the scholarship paid monthly?
No. The scholarship amount is stated as €750 per semester rather than a monthly stipend.
You should therefore not describe this scholarship as €125 per month or convert it into another monthly figure unless the foundation itself provides such a payment schedule.
Who can apply for the Von Behring-Röntgen Scholarship?
The 2026/27 call has a specific target group.
You need to:
- have obtained your university entrance qualification in Hesse
- begin studying Human Medicine
- study at Justus Liebig University Giessen or Philipps University Marburg
- have started your medical studies by the application deadline
- demonstrate an outstanding school-leaving academic record.
The current call specifically targets students beginning their medical studies in: Winter Semester 2026/27.
Do I need to have completed my Abitur in Hesse?
You need to have obtained your Hochschulzugangsberechtigung in Hesse.
The Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, or HZB, is the qualification that gives you access to university study in Germany.
For many applicants, this will be the German Abitur.
The important point is that the official call uses the broader term university entrance qualification and states that it must have been obtained in Hesse.
So the eligibility condition should not be simplified only to “you must have attended a Hessian school” unless that is true for your specific qualification.
Can international students apply?
Potentially, but international eligibility is restricted by the Hesse qualification requirement.
The official call does not state a nationality restriction.
However, every applicant must have obtained their university entrance qualification in Hesse and must begin Human Medicine at Giessen or Marburg.
This means an international student is not automatically excluded because of nationality, but simply holding a foreign school-leaving qualification does not appear sufficient under the published 2026 criteria.
If you are an international applicant and are unsure whether your qualification counts as having been obtained in Hesse, you should confirm your individual case with the Von Behring-Röntgen Foundation before applying.
Do I need German citizenship?
The official 2026 call does not state that German citizenship is required.
The key published geographic requirement concerns where you obtained your university entrance qualification Hesse.
Do not interpret this as unrestricted international eligibility, because the Hesse-HZB requirement still applies.
Which universities are eligible?
Only two universities are included in this scholarship programme Justus Liebig University Giessen and Philipps University Marburg.
If you study medicine at another German university, the current Von Behring-Röntgen scholarship for high-school graduates does not apply to you.
Can I apply before I enrol in medicine?
No, not by the final application deadline.
The official call states that by the time the application deadline is reached, you must already have started your medical studies at Justus Liebig University Giessen, or Philipps University Marburg.
This is important because a medical-school admission offer alone is not the same as having started your studies.
Your application also requires an enrolment certificate.
Can I apply if I am already in my second or third semester?
The 2026/27 call is specifically aimed at applicants who begin their medical studies in Winter Semester 2026/27.
The statement that funding covers the “first four semesters” describes the scholarship's funding period; it does not mean that students from any of semesters 1–4 can automatically apply.
If you started your medical degree before Winter Semester 2026/27, you should not assume that you qualify for this application round.
Do I need a specific Abitur grade?
The foundation does not publish a fixed numerical threshold such as:
- 1.0
- 1.2
- 1.5.
Instead, its first selection criterion is an outstanding average grade in the university entrance qualification.
Your school-leaving academic result is therefore one of the most important parts of the selection.
However, selection is not based exclusively on your grade.
What else does the foundation consider besides grades?
The selection committee considers four main areas.
1. Academic performance
Your university entrance qualification should show an outstanding average grade.
2. Special achievements, awards and prizes
The foundation considers exceptional achievements and recognised awards.
These can help show that your profile extends beyond your school-leaving grade.
3. Extracurricular engagement
Relevant engagement can include:
- volunteering
- social engagement
- political engagement
- participation in churches
- clubs
- associations.
4. Personal and family circumstances
The foundation can also take circumstances into account such as:
- illness
- disability
- the need to work alongside your studies
- family background
- migration background.
This means the scholarship does not simply rank applicants by their Abitur grade without considering their broader circumstances.
Does volunteering improve my application?
It can. Extracurricular engagement is explicitly included among the published selection criteria.
The foundation mentions activities including:
- voluntary work
- social involvement
- political involvement
- participation in churches
- associations
- clubs.
If you have relevant experience, make sure you include it in the online application and provide appropriate evidence where available.
Does migration background count in the selection?
Yes, it can be considered as part of your personal or family circumstances.
The official call specifically mentions migration background alongside circumstances such as illness, disability, family background and the need to work while studying.
This does not mean that having a migration background automatically gives you the scholarship. It is one contextual factor the foundation can consider alongside your academic performance and other achievements.
Can I receive BAföG and this scholarship together?
Yes. The foundation explicitly states that the scholarship is not counted against BAföG benefits.
This means receiving the Von Behring-Röntgen scholarship does not itself reduce your BAföG according to the current scholarship call.
Do I need work experience?
No work-experience requirement is published. The application form asks for information about areas including:
- internships
- extracurricular engagement
- achievements
- certificates.
However, the foundation does not state that applicants need a minimum amount of professional or medical work experience.
You therefore should not treat work experience as a mandatory eligibility condition.
Are internships considered?
Yes. The application form specifically asks you to provide information about: Praktika — internships.
If you have completed a relevant medical, scientific, social or other internship, include it accurately in your application.
The official selection criteria do not state that an internship is mandatory.
What benefits are available besides the €750 payment?
The programme also aims to build a network of current scholarship holders and former recipients.
The foundation organises: regular scholarship-holder meetings with the goal of creating a network of qualified medical students and graduates connected with Giessen and Marburg.
This gives the scholarship an additional networking component beyond the financial award.
What documents do you need?
Your application consists of: an online application form plus: one combined PDF file.
The PDF should contain:
- cover letter
- signed CV
- university entrance qualification / school-leaving certificate
- enrolment certificate
- additional documents and certificates supporting the information in your CV.
The foundation explicitly states that: multiple PDF uploads are not possible.
You should therefore combine all supporting material into one file before beginning the final application.
What information is required in the online form?
Before uploading your application PDF, you need to provide information including:
- name
- address
- email address
- mobile phone number
- date of birth
- Abitur/HZB grade
- school location
- study location
- special achievements
- certificates
- internships
- school and extracurricular engagement
- special personal circumstances.
This information should match the supporting evidence you provide in your PDF.
Do I need a cover letter?
Yes. The official 2026 call explicitly includes an: Anschreiben — cover letter among the documents that your combined PDF should contain.
Use the letter to present your profile clearly and explain why your academic achievements, engagement and personal journey make you a strong candidate.
Does my CV need to be signed?
Yes. The call specifically asks for a: signed CV. This is an easy requirement to miss.
Before merging your documents into the final PDF, make sure the CV contains the required signature.
Do I need an enrolment certificate?
Yes. Your combined PDF should include your: Immatrikulationsbescheinigung — enrolment certificate.
This supports the requirement that you must have started studying medicine at Giessen or Marburg by the application deadline.
